Garden Surprises!
So I made the mistake of thinking that once the weeds in your garden have become so thick it is hard to walk that your vegetable garden is through. I truly thought I would get nothing. Jon and I were clearing some weeds tonight and found an abundance of surprises.
To date I have about 5 lbs of scallopini from the garden. I'm not sure they are supposed to be this big. I always thought they were smaller but this is my first year growing these so I'm learning.
On the left is my overwinter cabbage that is only just ready now and on the right is my summer cabbage. To date I have about 7 lbs of cabbage from the garden. I'm going to be making a lot of sauerkraut.
The fabulous basket of goodies. In this basket we have 2.5 lbs of red potatoes, 4.5 lbs of yukon gold potatoes, 4.5 lbs of cucumber, 0.5 lbs of tomatoes, some onions and carrots. I also got 4 lbs of zucchini but I didn't get a picture of them. It's amazing. Those potatoes were completely taken over by weeds but as we were digging out the weeds we kept finding potato after potato. And I cannot believe how much cucumber I have. I thought they all had died from lack of water but now I guess I have some pickling to do.

Awesome! The whole concept of weeding and gardening is pretty new. Fruits and veggies have thrived for centuries without our help. This happened to us last year when our daughter was born and we couldn't find the time to tend to our garden. It did just fine!
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised because when the weeds took over I just stopped watering and some of the weeds are so tall that I thought nothing underneath would get sunlight. Last year my garden was pretty successful without much care I just felt pretty convinced that this year everything was being deprived of the basics. I guess I was wrong. I should never doubt Mother Nature!
ReplyDeleteMmmm... yummy garden food. You're a lucky lady! My garden this year has been experiencing a lot of pregnancy-induced neglect... and then got pretty well finished off by a hail storm. Fortunately, I have a number of gardening friends to keep us in tomatoes.
