Labourous Labour Day

I spent my Labour Day long weekend canning. Canning is a lot of work. I love my garden but I'm getting really tired of preserving. I know I will really appreciate all the hard work I did this summer when its snowing and I'm eating yummy organic produce from the garden but right now I'm really sick of it.Here is what I accomplished in the afternoon. I made strawberry jam, blackberry jam, vanilla pears, crushed tomatoes and pureed pumpkin. After this photo I made more vanilla pears, tomato chutney and I sliced up some more zucchini for freezing. It may not look like a lot but it took up most of my day. Everything had to be picked from the garden, washed, peeled, blanched, boiled, baked, pureed, sterilized, canned, sealed, etc. Phew, next year I'll plant a little less ;)

  1. Wow! I bet you are going to be loving that this winter. I wish I'd got enough to save some, but we pretty much ate whatever grew as it grew. What are vanilla pears? They sound yummy. And I love homemade jam. I'd love to learn to make my own raspberry jam, except we ended up getting no raspberries lol. Oh well. :)

  2. Vanilla pears are just pears peeled and sliced then boiled in vanilla syrup (just water, sugar and a whole vanilla bean) and finally canned in that same syrup. They are really yummy and the perfect cure for a sweet tooth.
I love raspberry jam. We didn't get enough raspberries for jam so I think next year I'll end up buying some for that very purpose.
